What is a cataract?
A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens in the eye. A cataract is very common and typically age-related. This clouding causes an effect similar to a dirty windshield causing glare, hazy or diminished vision and a fading of colors. This is because the light which normally comes through the lens to the retina is distorted. It usually develops slowly and is not necessarily the same in both eyes. The only treatment for improved vision is replacing the affected lens.
What is cataract surgery?
Cataract surgery is one of the most commonly performed surgery in the United States. It has up to a 99% success rate depending upon the technology and surgeon and involves the removal of your natural lens and replacement with a manufactured lens. Outside of the U.S. up to 40% of blindness is caused by cataracts.
How is cataract surgery performed?
Dr. Pizio of Better Eyes uses advanced technology called a “phacoemulsification” machine. The “phaco” uses ultrasonic energy to liquefy the clouded natural lens. This happens while a high-definition operating microscope provides the surgeon with the necessary “red reflex” and depth perception to operate within the eyes’ anterior chamber. Additionally, precise pre-operative diagnostic tools, such as optical biometers, are essential for calculating the specific power of the intraocular lens (IOL). These lenses will be permanently implanted to restore the patient’s vision. This is why the best cataract surgeons like Dr. Pizio conduct extensive testing for your vision needs prior to surgery.
What are key cataract surgery considerations?
The surgical suite must meet stringent sterility standards to prevent sight-threatening infections like endophthalmitis. This requires air filtration systems and specific protocols for the cleaning and sterilization of micro-instruments. Dr. Pizio only performs patient’s surgeries in Centers for Medicare and Medicaid approved facilities to assure the most sterile conditions are met.
How long does it take for a cataract surgeon to perform the operation
The Cataract surgeon typically takes about 15 to 30 minutes per eye, depending on the complexity of the case and the specific techniques used by the surgeon. During the procedure, the surgeon removes the clouded lens of the eye and replaces it with an artificial intraocular lens. Although the surgery itself is relatively quick, patients may spend additional time in the surgical facility for pre-operative preparations and post-operative recovery. In total, including all aspects of the visit, patients can expect to be at the surgical center for a few hours on the day of the surgery. Overall, cataract surgery is considered a safe and efficient procedure with a high success rate.
What type of anesthesia will the surgeon use?
The cataract surgeon will typically perform the procedure using local anesthesia. This numbs the eye and surrounding area to ensure patient comfort during the procedure. This may be administered as eye drops or through injections around the eye. This allows the patient to remain awake and alert while minimizing any sensation of pain or discomfort. In some cases, a mild sedative may also be given to help the patient relax during surgery. The combination of local anesthesia and sedation provides a safe and effective way to perform the surgery while maintaining the patient’s comfort throughout the process.
How often should I visit the surgeon after surgery?
After cataract surgery, it is generally recommended to have follow-up appointments with your cataract surgeon within the first two weeks. This allows us to monitor your healing process and ensure that your vision is improving as expected. Typically, a scheduled visit will occur one day after the surgery. We then follow by additional check-ups around one week, one month, and then three to six months post-operatively. During these appointments, the surgeon will assess your visual acuity, check for any potential complications, and make recommendations for further care. Your individual follow-up schedule may vary based on your specific circumstances and it’s important to follow your surgeon’s advice regarding the frequency of visits after your surgery.
